A homicide investigation was underway Monday morning after a Zion man in his 20s was found shot and killed at a gas station in Waukegan.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 5 a.m. to the Citgo, 2135 North Green Bay Road in Waukegan, for a report of shots fired.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said officers arrived and located a victim in the driver’s seat of a 2014 Chrysler 300. The vehicle was parked near the gas pumps.

The Waukegan Fire Department was called to the scene and paramedics confirmed the victim was dead.

Florip said the victim was a man in his 20s and he resided in Zion. An autopsy is being scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The man’s identity will be released after the autopsy is complete and the man’s family has been notified, Florip added.

The Waukegan Police Department Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the shooting.

Shell casings were recovered but police are not releasing the caliber or number of casings recovered.

The motive for the shooting is unknown and no suspects are in custody yet, Florip said.
