No charges will be filed against a horse rider who shot and killed a dog following “an incident” on the Des Plaines River Trail in Libertyville earlier this year.

The Lake County Forest Preserves Ranger Police responded around 5:10 p.m. on April 16 to the Des Plaines River Trail north of Route 137 in Libertyville.

A person was walking with their unleashed dog on the trail, according to a statement from the Lake County Forest Preserves Ranger Police.

There was “an incident” between the dog and a horse and its rider on the trail, police said.

The horse rider, who had a concealed carry license, shot the dog. The dog died at the scene.

The horse was taken via trailer to a local veterinarian to be treated for injuries. No humans were injured during the incident.

Lake County Forest Preserves Communications Specialist Kimberly Mikus said the case has been closed and no charges were filed following the investigation.
