Police arrested a juvenile who brought a BB gun to Canterbury Elementary School in Crystal Lake and shot other children with it, officials said.
The Crystal Lake Police Department responded Tuesday afternoon to Canterbury Elementary School, 875 Canterbury Drive in Crystal Lake.
Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Derek Hyrkas said officers received a call of a juvenile with a gun on the playground of the school.
Officers quickly responded and took the juvenile into custody.
Hyrkas said it was determined the firearm was actually a BB gun, not a real gun.
Officers also determined the juvenile offender shot a few other children in the playground area with the BB gun.
Those that were struck by the BB gun pellets sustained “very minor injuries,” Hyrkas said.
It is unclear if any charges have been filed and no additional details were released on the incident, which took place after school hours.
“Again, since this event involves a juvenile offender, I cannot release any further information,” Hyrkas added.
Denise Barr, Director of Communications and Public Engagement for Crystal Lake Elementary District 47, declined to comment on the incident to Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
“This is now a police investigation,” Barr said, deferring comment to the Crystal Lake Police Department.
