A woman was shot over the weekend after a man pulled a gun and fired shots at a shoe store in Waukegan, witnesses and police said.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 11:11 a.m. Saturday to the Shoe Carnival, 1511 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan, for a report of shots fired.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said a female victim was shot. No one else was hit by the gunfire.

The woman was transported to a local hospital. Florip said the woman’s condition is unknown.

One witness said a man cut in front of people waiting in line at the store. The manager told the man he had to go to the end of the line.

The witness said that the man went out to his car and got a gun and then began shooting.

Florip said that the woman who was struck by gunfire was not an employee of the store. The suspect is not in custody, Florip said on Monday.

A police radio alert issued to area police departments at the time of the shooting said that the offender was a thin build, tall male black.

He fled southbound from the scene in what was believed to be a smaller dark-colored Cadillac SUV, the alert said.

Photos of the scene showed evidence markers placed around shell casings in the parking lot in front of the store as police investigated.
