State police have cited the driver of a vehicle that struck a police car and injured a McHenry County sheriff’s sergeant near Marengo last weekend.

Abiel Arellano-Francisco, 19, of Woodstock, was cited for driving too fast for conditions, failure to yield at a stop intersection and transportation or possession of alcoholic liquor in a motor vehicle.

Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said the incident happened around 10:35 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Route 23 and River Road in unincorporated Marengo.

The Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts, Marengo Police Department and additional McHenry County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene.

A McHenry County sheriff Dodge Charger was traveling near the intersection when it collided with another vehicle, according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Delila Garcia.

Garcia said the sergeant has since been treated and released from the hospital.

The driver of the Ford Taurus, identified as Arellano-Francisco, along with his passenger, were both uninjured.

Photos from the scene showed a Modelo beer on the front driver side dashboard of the Ford.

The Illinois State Police were called to the scene to conduct an independent investigation.

Arellano-Francisco is scheduled to appear in court on the citations on November 16, court records show.
