Police say two vehicles that were racing or driving recklessly together caused a crash that left three people hospitalized and a car dangling from a utility pole cable in Zion.

The Zion Police Department and Zion Fire and Rescue Department were called around 6:50 p.m. Monday to 31st Street and Lebanon Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Zion Police Department Lt. Christopher Sweeting told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a preliminary investigation shows two vehicles were either racing or driving recklessly in the area.

One of the vehicles hit a third vehicle, which ended up becoming stuck on a power line pole support cable.

Sweeting said the driver of the third vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and had to be extricated by firefighters.

The driver of one of the other two vehicles fled the scene and is being sought by authorities.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was placed on standby but ended up not being needed.

In total, paramedics transported two adults and a young child to the hospital.

Sweeting said there were numerous witnesses to the incident but the primary cause of the crash has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
