Firefighters, with the help of a sprinkler system, extinguished a fire at Lake Zurich Middle School South early Friday morning which left the building with smoke and water damage.
The Lake Zurich Fire Department responded around 12:33 a.m. Friday to an activated fire alarm call at Lake Zurich Middle School – South Campus, 435 West Cuba Road in Lake Zurich.
The first arriving crews were on the scene within six minutes and started an investigation into the alarm, according to the Lake Zurich Fire Department.
Crews identified a water flow alarm and upon further investigation found an active fire in a vestibule.
The fire triggered a sprinkler head to activate, which is what caused the initial fire alarm.
The incident was upgraded to a working structure fire response to bring more resources to the scene, officials said.
With the sprinkler system containing the fire, fire department crews quickly extinguished the remaining fire. The building also sustained water and smoke damage.
The school was unoccupied when the incident occurred and no firefighters were injured.
A damage estimate was not immediately available but fire officials said the blaze was contained to the area of origin.
An initial investigation indicated the fire was caused by a fault in an electrical appliance.
The Lake Zurich Fire Department was assisted by the Barrington, Barrington-Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Crystal Lake, Elk Grove Township, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Mundelein and Wauconda fire departments.
The Lake Zurich Fire Department said they recommend commercial business owners test their sprinkler and alarm systems yearly.
