The Libertyville Police Department announced the death of former police chief Clinton Herdegen, who served in law enforcement for 40 years.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share with you the passing of former Libertyville Police Chief Clinton Herdegen,” the department announced Friday.

Herdegen, 61, died peacefully on Monday at his Hoffman Estates home surrounded by family members.

Village officials previously said in July that Deputy Chief Ed Roncone had been serving as acting police chief since December 2020 while Herdegen was out on medical leave.

The village said Herdegen had been awarded a non-duty disability pension by the Police Pension Board in June due to an ongoing illness.

In July, Roncone was selected and sworn in as the new police chief.

Prior to joining the Libertyville Police Department, Herdegen had a 29-year career with the Hoffman Estates Police Department, which included 12 years as police chief.

He was sworn in as the Libertyville police chief in October 2010.

During his 40-year career, Herdegen was an active member in the law enforcement community where he served as the president of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, chairman of the Northwest Police Academy and former president of the Northeastern Illinois Regional Crime Laboratory.

“We ask that you keep Chief Herdegen’s family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace Chief Herdegen,” the Libertyville Police Department said in a statement.

A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at Morizzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2550 West Hassell Road in Hoffman Estates.
