Police confirm one person was shot and transported in critical condition after gunfire erupted in the parking lot of Portillo’s next to Gurnee Mills Saturday afternoon.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 2:10 p.m. to Portillo’s, 6102 West Grand Avenue in Gurnee, for a report of a shooting.
A 911 caller reported to police dispatchers that approximately 8-10 shots were fired in the area and someone was down on the ground, according to fire radio traffic.
Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said one victim sustained critical injuries after being struck by the gunfire.
Paramedics transported the victim by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Covelli said the Lake County Major Crime Task Force was activated to assist the Gurnee Police Department in the investigation.
Police put up crime scene tape as they investigated the shooting, which appeared to have occurred in a parking lot between Gurnee Mills and the Portillo’s restaurant.
At least two bystanders reported their vehicles had been struck by the gunfire.
Additional details were not immediately available Saturday evening, Covelli said. It is unclear if anyone is in custody.
