The coroner’s office has released the identity of a 26-year-old Zion man who died on Saturday after he was shot multiple times in the parking lot of Portillo’s next to Gurnee Mills.

An autopsy showed that Jonathan Denicolas, 26, of Zion, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 2:10 p.m. Saturday to Portillo’s, 6102 West Grand Avenue in Gurnee, for a report of a shooting.

A 911 caller reported to police dispatchers that approximately 8-10 shots were fired in the area and someone was down on the ground, according to fire radio traffic.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said that a Good Samaritan administered first aid to Denicolas before police and paramedics arrived.

Denicolas was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.

Covelli said that the offender or offenders involved in the shooting fled the scene prior to police arrival.

At least two bystanders reported their vehicles had been struck by the gunfire.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force was activated to assist the Gurnee Police Department in the investigation.

On Monday, Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that investigators believe Denicolas was targeted and the shooting was not a random act.

No one is in custody yet but investigators are making progress in the investigation, Covelli added.

The incident is actively under investigation by Gurnee police detectives and Lake County Major Crime Task Force investigators.
