A female employee was shot after shots were fired during an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Waukegan Saturday afternoon, police said.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 2:50 p.m. Saturday to Plaza Jewelry, 1522 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan, for a report of an armed robbery with injuries.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said the jewelry store was targeted in the robbery.
Two suspects reportedly entered the store and one of them fired shots from a handgun.
A female employee was struck by the gunfire, Florip said. She was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Fire department radio traffic indicated the woman was shot in her arm or hand.
An alert to area police departments was broadcasted over the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network following the incident.
The alert said two suspects were involved and fled in a white Honda sedan, which had its front license plate on the passenger side dashboard.
One of the suspects was a male black wearing blue jeans and the second was a male Hispanic with tattoos on his face and neck, wearing an all-white athletic outfit.
The suspects fled in the white Honda sedan southbound on Westmoreland from Lewis Avenue, the alert said.
The alert also said that one of the suspects had possibly been shot in the leg during the incident.
Florip said it is unknown at this time if more than one person discharged a gun. The Waukegan Police Department is actively investigating.
