The Libertyville Police Department announced the death of former police chief Patrick Carey. He is the second former chief of the department to die in the span of less than a week.

Former Libertyville police chief Patrick Carey, 72, died peacefully at his home last Friday morning, an obituary said.

The death comes days after another former Libertyville police chief, Clinton Herdegen, died on November 26.

Carey was also a former Glenview deputy police chief, the Libertyville Police Department said.

Carey started his career in law enforcement with the Glenview Police Department.

He rose through the ranks and became deputy chief of police.

After retiring from the Glenview Police Department, Carey was sworn in as the Libertyville chief of police.

After retiring from the Libertyville Police Department, Carey continued to serve his community as a police commissioner and Libertyville village trustee.

“His leadership, police expertise and commitment to the communities he served was widely recognized and respected both within and outside the law enforcement profession,” the department said.

A visitation will be held next Saturday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Boulevard in Skokie.

“We ask that you keep Chief Carey’s family in your thoughts and prayers,” the department added.
