An investigation is underway after a sex offender being held in the Lake County Jail died after he was found unresponsive in his cell Monday evening.

Lake County Jail corrections officers were conducting rounds in their pod at 8:15 p.m. Monday, according to Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesperson Heather Cognac.

The officers located a 61-year-old jail inmate unconscious in his cell.

Corrections officers immediately administered first-aid and deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED), Cognac said.

Corrections officers determined the man was not breathing and they conducted CPR until paramedics arrived.

The man was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was later pronounced deceased.

There was no visible trauma to the man and foul play is not suspected, Cognac said.

The man was in a single-inmate cell and did not have an inmate roommate.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday morning.

The man has been in custody since November 17 and was being held on charges of grooming and violation of the sexual offender registry.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to conduct an independent investigation, which is ongoing at this time, Cognac said.
