A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with a felony after police say he was the source of a social media threat directed towards Marengo Community High School.

Marengo Police Department Sgt. Andrew Kjellgren said his department received a report Thursday evening regarding a message sent on a social media platform.

The messages were threatening in nature and directed towards Marengo Community High School.

Police were able to quickly identify and locate the alleged source of the social media messages, Kjellgren said.

The offender in the incident was identified as a 15-year-old boy, who is a student at Marengo Community High School.

“The Police Department has been working closely with high school administration to assure the safety of the staff and students,” Kjellgren said.

The 15-year-old, whose name is not being released due to him being a juvenile, was charged with one count of disorderly conduct, a Class 4 felony.

Kjellgren said that appropriate disciplinary action will also be taken by the school. “The Marengo Police Department and the Marengo Community High School take any threat like this very seriously.”

It is believed that no threat to the public or school exists, police said.

The Marengo Police Department will provide extra patrol and security around the school.

“The Marengo Police Department wishes to thank those that brought this matter to our attention and to remind the public to report anything suspicious,” Kjellgren said.
