A man convicted of attempted murder was sentenced on Friday to 25 years in prison for breaking into a Crystal Lake home, sexually assaulting a woman and repeatedly stabbing a man.
Michael A. Vrba, 37, of the 300 block of Millard Avenue in Crystal Lake, was indicted on charges of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault, three counts of aggravated battery, residential burglary and aggravated domestic battery.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:22 a.m. on January 9, 2020, to the 6000 block of Acorn Court in unincorporated Crystal Lake to assist the fire department on a medical call.
Deputies discovered a 29-year-old Crystal Lake man with knife wounds, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
The man was transported by ambulance in serious condition to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry and was then flown by helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Prosecutors said Vrba broke into the residence in the early morning hours while armed with a knife.
Once Vrba was inside the home, he repeatedly stabbed the 29-year-old victim in the neck and chest, prosecutors said.
Court records show he also sexually assaulted someone in the home.
Prosecutors say he left some of the clothes he was wearing during the attack on the front lawn of the residence as he fled the scene.
Vrba was arrested the same day of the attack and has been held in the McHenry County Jail on a $1 million bond since his arrest.
On Friday, Vrba entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
He pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder, a Class X felony, in exchange for his nine other felony charges being dismissed, court records show.
McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge accepted the plea deal and sentenced Vrba to 25 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The case was investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Mary Ann Scholl and Jim Newman.
