A judge has set bond at $1 million for a man charged with the attempted murder of his girlfriend, who was stabbed inside a home near McHenry. The house caught fire a short time later.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:40 p.m. Saturday to the 500 block of Sunrise Drive in unincorporated McHenry.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said a 25-year-old woman reported that she had been battered and stabbed by her boyfriend, identified as Alexander P. Campos, 25, of McHenry.

The woman was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with non-life-threatening injuries

As deputies were taking Campos into custody at his residence on Sunrise Drive, which is where the stabbing occurred, his residence was discovered to be on fire around 10:19 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Captain Chris Gumm said firefighters arrived in under six minutes and found a split-level home with flames coming out the front door and windows.

Fire crews worked to extinguish the house fire and search the residence for additional occupants.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring additional water to the scene since the area does not have fire hydrants, Gumm said.

The fire was brought under control 50 minutes after the fire department’s arrival.

Crews remained on the scene for several hours, overhauling the building and conducting a fire investigation, Gumm said.

A firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

The damage to the structure was substantial and the home has been deemed uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

The sheriff’s office called the incident “an isolated incident” and there is no threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.

Campos was charged with one count of first-degree murder, a Class X felony.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Campos took a “substantial step” toward the commission of first-degree murder when he stabbed the victim in the upper chest area with a knife.

Campos had an active warrant for his arrest at the time of the Saturday incident for failing to appear at a court hearing in a case where he was charged with attacking a family member and spitting on a police officer in November.

Campos remains held in the McHenry County Jail on a $1.015 million bond. He would need to post $101,500 cash in order to be released.

Campos’s public defender filed a motion to reduce bond, saying the man is not a danger to the community and not a flight risk.

A bond hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
