Eugene J. Poninski Jr., 40, of McHenry.

A McHenry man has been charged with punching a female police officer in the face in McHenry, court documents said.

Eugene J. Poninski Jr., 40, of the 3500 block of Pearl Street in McHenry, was charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, a Class 2 felony, and criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor.

Poninski caused bodily harm to a McHenry City Police Department officer on December 14, according to a criminal complaint.

Poninski struck the female officer in the face with his fist at his residence in the 3500 block of West Pearl Street in McHenry, the complaint said.

The officer’s prescription eyeglasses were damaged during the incident.

A McHenry County judge set bond at $20,000, meaning Poninski would need to post $2,000 in order to be released from the McHenry County Jail.

Assistant Public Defender Kim Messer filed a motion to reduce bond on behalf of Poninski, saying that the man was unable to post 10% of his bond.
