A man was killed and six others were hospitalized, including three children who were seriously injured, following a head-on crash in Round Lake Beach Tuesday evening.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 8:33 p.m. to Route 83 and Lexington Drive for a report of a serious crash with injuries.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a sheriff’s deputy on patrol happened to come upon the scene immediately following the crash.

Covelli said the deputy found a child with major injuries. The child was unconscious and not breathing.

The deputy performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived and took over care.

Round Lake Beach Deputy Police Chief Wayne Wilde said officers arrived to find a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and 2012 Chevrolet Silverado involved in the intersection. Both vehicles had heavy damage.

The 41-year-old man driving the Chevrolet Equinox was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six others, including the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, were transported by ambulances to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Wilde said.

Passengers in the Chevrolet Equinox included a 44-year-old woman and four children.

The 44-year-old woman remains in critical condition at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

A 5-year-old child is in critical condition at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

A 10-year-old child and a 12-year-old child are both stabilized at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Their conditions were not immediately available, Wilde said.

A 14-year-old child has since been released from the hospital.

The 40-year-old man driving the Chevrolet Silverado is from Wisconsin and his condition has been stabilized at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

He has submitted to drug and alcohol testing, Wilde said.

Police are still waiting for results to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The Round Lake Beach Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County.

Route 83 was closed between Millstone Drive and Monaville Road while the incident was being investigated.

The roadway was reopened early Wednesday morning.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy on the 41-year-old man and will release his identity once family notifications have been made.

The incident remains under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department, Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
