A man is in critical condition and two others were hospitalized after a reckless driver caused a multi-vehicle crash in Beach Park Saturday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Beach Park Fire Department responded around 4:40 p.m. Saturday to York House Road and Sheridan Road in Beach Park for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located three vehicles, two with major damage, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
A preliminary investigation shows the driver of a 2010 Subaru crossover, driven by a 42-year-old man who resides in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, was traveling northbound on Sheridan Road approaching York House Road.
Witnesses reported that the driver of the Subaru was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed, Covelli said.
The driver of the Subaru attempted to pass a northbound 2006 Honda Civic, driven by a 20-year-old Zion man.
While passing, the Subaru struck the Honda, causing both vehicles to lose control. The Honda went off the roadway and struck a tree.
The Subaru continued northbound for several hundred feet where it went off the roadway, striking a utility pole, which caused it to roll over.
The Subaru then struck a northbound 2002 GMC Sierra, driven by a 39-year-old Zion man.
Covelli said the driver of the Subaru was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan in critical condition.
The driver of the Honda and his front-seat passenger, a 21-year-old Zion man, were both transported to Vista Medical Center East with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the GMC and his passenger, a 7-year-old boy, were uninjured.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
