The medical examiner’s office has identified a 5-year-old boy who died on Monday nearly two weeks after a Round Lake Beach crash that also killed his father.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police Department responded on January 25 to Route 83 and Lexington Drive for a report of a serious crash with injuries.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a sheriff’s deputy on patrol happened to come upon the scene immediately following the crash.

Covelli said the deputy found a child with major injuries. The child was unconscious and not breathing.

The deputy performed CPR on the child until paramedics with the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District arrived and took over care.

Round Lake Beach Deputy Police Chief Wayne Wilde said officers arrived to find a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and 2012 Chevrolet Silverado involved in the intersection. Both vehicles had heavy damage.

Epifanio Camarena, 41, of Round Lake, was killed and six others, including the driver of the Silverado, were injured in the crash. Camarena was driving the Equinox.

Camarena’s wife and children were among those hospitalized. The 5-year-old son was in critical condition, a GoFundMe said.

Wilde said the 5-year-old died on Monday at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

The child was identified as Jesus Camarena, of Round Lake, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Epifanio Camarena’s 44-year-old wife was recently released from Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The 10-year-old child and the 12-year-old child were both treated at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and released, Wilde said.

The 14-year-old child was released from the hospital on the night of the crash.

The 40-year-old man driving the Silverado has also been released from Advocate Condell Medical Center.

Wilde said no charges have been filed against anyone involved in the crash at this time.

Over 700 donors raised more than $38,000 for the Camarena family as of Wednesday morning.

The crash remains under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department, Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
