Wasfi Awwad, 28, of Lake in the Hills.

A Lake in the Hills man is being held on a $1 million bond after being charged with buying fentanyl-laced cocaine that caused a McHenry man’s death.

Wasfi Awwad, 28, of the 1100 block of View Point Drive in Lake in the Hills, was charged with three counts of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Awwad delivered cocaine and fentanyl to Daniel Iles, 30, of McHenry, on September 22.

Iles ingested a portion of the cocaine and fentanyl, leading to his death, the complaint said.

A motion filed by McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew T. Brodersen said that Iles was found deceased in a room at the Super 8 Motel, 577 Crystal Point Road in Crystal Lake, on September 22.

A search of the room resulted in the recovery of a white powder that later tested positive for the presence of cocaine.

Investigators conducted a search of Awwad’s phone and interviewed Awwad and others.

Through the investigation, it was learned Awwad arranged to purchase Percocet pills and cocaine for himself and Iles on September 21, Brodersen said.

Awwad and Iles went to Palatine to pick up the cocaine and Percocet pills. Awwad was the one who purchased the drugs, Brodersen said.

An autopsy on Iles led to the finding that his death was caused by the combined effects of cocaine and fentanyl.

An arrest warrant carrying a $1 million bond was issued for Awwad on January 20 by a McHenry County judge.

Awwad, who was arrested on Tuesday, remains held in the McHenry County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on March 9.
