Bystanders and first responders received lifesaving awards this week for saving the life of a man who went into cardiac arrest while working out at a Lake in the Hills gym.

Lake in the Hills resident Brian Kuhn was riding a stationary bike at Anytime Fitness, 9521 Ackman Road in Lake in the Hills, on December 26.

Kuhn suffered a very sudden and serious cardiac arrest, according to the Huntley Fire Protection District.

Three bystanders at the fitness facility noticed Kuhn collapse. All three bystanders coordinated their efforts to save the man’s life, fire officials said.

One bystander called 911 while the others began chest compressions and retrieved an AED.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene within five minutes and completed the chain of survival by early defibrillation, fire officials said.

Kuhn had a return of spontaneous circulation within five minutes of first responders arriving.

Crews continued to provide post-cardiac arrest care until the man was transferred to emergency department staff at Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital.

Kuhn was later transferred to Advocate Good Shepard Hospital in Barrington where he underwent quadruple bypass of a 90% blockage.

“Although emergency personnel arrived on scene within minutes of receiving the call, we know seconds can feel like hours. The Huntley Fire Protection District wanted to commend and celebrate the efforts of everyone that took action in the Chain of Survival,” the fire district said in a statement.

A lifesaving award ceremony took place at Huntley Fire Protection District’s headquarters on Tuesday prior to their regular board of trustees meeting.

The lifesaving awards were presented to three bystanders, SEECOM Telecommunicator Wilhelm, Lake in the Hills Police Officer Jack Scurte and all of the Huntley Fire Protection District personnel assigned to the call.

Immediate CPR can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest, fire officials said.

The Huntley Fire Protection District offers various CPR classes through the American Heart Association.

The classes are offered throughout the year with dates available on their website at www.HuntleyFPD.org/cpr-classes.
