Police are investigating after two men in their 20s were shot, leaving one with serious injuries, at the parking lot of Walmart in Waukegan Saturday afternoon.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 1:30 p.m. to the Walmart Supercenter, 3900 Fountain Square Place, for a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and located evidence of a shooting but no victim, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip.

A multiple-vehicle crash was reported nearby moments later, Florip said.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash, an SUV, was occupied by a driver and passenger.

The passenger appeared to be shot and he was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, believed to be from a gunshot or gunshots, Florip said.

The SUV and the driver are in police custody.

A short time later, a sedan arrived at an area hospital and dropped off another gunshot victim.

Detectives believe the SUV and the sedan had an altercation at the parking lot and shots were fired.

Both vehicles then fled the scene, Florip said.

Florip said both victims are described as males in their 20s.

The motive of the shooting is currently unknown and the case is open and active as information unfolds quickly.

Police believe there is no threat to the public from this incident.
