A child inside an idling car that was stolen in Waukegan had a gun pointed at them after the suspect realized the child was in the back seat of the car.
The incident happened at the Dollar General, 1501 Belvidere Road in Waukegan, around 8:30 p.m. Monday.
A woman told police that she exited her vehicle, which was left running with the keys in the ignition, and entered the store.
A child, who was under the age of 16, was in the back seat of the vehicle, according to a police summary report.
Someone stole the car but stopped it nearby after realizing the child was in the car.
The suspect pointed a handgun at the child and yelled for the child to get out, the police report said.
The child and the mother were reunited and went to the Waukegan Police Department to report the incident.
Officers searched for the hijacked vehicle and an officer spotted it a short time later.
A traffic stop was attempted but the vehicle fled and police did not pursue it, the police report said. The vehicle was later located unoccupied in Park City.
The suspect was not taken into custody and the incident remains under investigation.
