The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory to warn of freezing rain that could cause hazardous conditions in Lake and McHenry counties.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the advisory for Lake, McHenry, Boone, Winnebago and Ogle counties.

The advisory, which was issued Tuesday morning, will remain in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Periodic freezing rain or freezing drizzle is expected. Total ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are possible.

Difficult travel conditions are possible due to icy roads, including Interstate 39 and Interstate 90.

Bridges and overpasses, as well as untreated roads and sidewalks, are most vulnerable, the NWS said.

“Slow down and use caution while traveling. Prepare for possible power outages,” the advisory said.

Motorists have already reported icy road conditions in McHenry County.
