Two Crystal Lake men were hospitalized with serious injuries after a three-vehicle crash near Algonquin Thursday morning, officials said.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Kane County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11:35 a.m. Thursday to Route 31 and Lundstrom Lane in Algonquin for a three-vehicle crash with injuries.

Emergency crews arrived and located a Chevrolet Camaro, Volkswagen sedan and a third vehicle involved, according to Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Deputy Fire Chief John Knebl and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 36-year-old Crystal Lake man, and the driver of the Volkswagen, a 46-year-old Crystal Lake man, were both trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated by firefighters.

Paramedics transported one of the drivers to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital and the other was transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Knebl said.

Both drivers suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Two other occupants in the third vehicle were treated and released from the scene.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and Kane County sheriff’s detectives responded to the scene for an investigation.

The sheriff’s office said the Chevrolet was attempting to pass a vehicle while traveling southbound on Route 31.

The Chevrolet lost control while passing the vehicle and struck the Volkswagen.

The Volkswagen then struck the third vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials are not sure if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
