The vacant Ramada Inn hotel in Waukegan caught fire Wednesday evening and firefighters were able to quickly stop the fire from spreading.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to 200 North Green Bay Road in Waukegan.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that someone called 911 after spotting smoke coming from the rear of the building.

The building used to be the Ramada Inn hotel, which has been vacant for over three years now.

Firefighters arrived to find flames showing from one of the rooms on the second floor in the rear of the structure, Zupec said.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and confine it to a single room.

Firefighters were on scene for approximately two hours completing overhaul and ensuring the fire had not spread, Zupec said.
