A Highland Park man is in critical condition and two others were hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash in Mettawa Friday morning that was possibly caused by snowy road conditions.
The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, Libertyville Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:45 a.m. Friday to the area of Route 60 and St. Mary’s Road in Mettawa for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said sheriff’s deputies arrived to find three vehicles involved with heavy damage east of the intersection.
A preliminary investigation showed a 2019 Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 21-year-old Highland Park man, was traveling westbound on Route 60 just east of St. Mary’s Road.
The driver of the Hyundai lost control of his vehicle possibly due to weather-related conditions, Covelli said.
The Hyundai crossed into the eastbound lanes of traffic and was struck by an eastbound 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by a 24-year-old Mundelein woman.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee then struck an eastbound Jeep Compass, driven by a 60-year-old Highwood man.
The 21-year-old driver of the Hyundai was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical, life-threatening injuries.
The 24-year-old driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Covelli said the 60-year-old driver of the Jeep Compass was also transported to Lake Forest Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Eastbound Route 60 was shut down for several hours Friday morning while investigators worked at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
