A 20-year-old man who allegedly shot and seriously injured a man during a carjacking in Waukegan is being held on a $3 million bond.
Kendrick Alverson, 20, of the 1000 block of Evergreen Circle in Olympia Fields, was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery.
A criminal complaint filed in Lake County Circuit Court alleges Alverson shot a man on December 13, 2020.
The shooting happened during a carjacking, the complaint said.
Two people were inside a car when Alverson fired shots into the vehicle, the complaint said.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the incident occurred in the 4200 block of Continental Drive in Waukegan.
The victim suffered serious life-threatening injuries in the shooting. The victim was shot in the abdomen.
Florip said the carjacking was unprovoked and the motive is unknown. There is no relation between the suspect and the victim.
No other suspects were involved in the incident.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges in January 2021 and a Lake County judge signed a warrant for Alverson’s arrest.
Alverson was taken into custody last month and ordered held on a $3 million bond.
He remains held in the Lake County Jail as of Tuesday.
Court records show Alverson has two prior convictions for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in Cook County.
Alverson is scheduled to appear in court again on March 16 for a preliminary hearing in the case.
