A woman in her 20s was killed after her car rolled over and became fully engulfed in flames during a two-vehicle crash on Route 120 in Waukegan Tuesday.
The Waukegan Police Department, Gurnee Fire Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday to Route 120 and River Road in Waukegan for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Officers arrived and located a serious crash involving two vehicles, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip.
One of the vehicles, a gray 2017 Honda minivan, was rolled over on its roof and engulfed in flames.
The Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Unit (MCU) was activated to respond due to the severity of the incident.
MCU investigators believe that the gray 2017 Honda SUV was attempting to cross Route 120 traffic from River Road when a black 2003 Infiniti sedan, which was traveling eastbound, struck the Honda.
The driver of the Honda, a Waukegan woman in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, Florip said.
The driver of the Infiniti, a Waukegan man in his 20s, suffered a serious leg injury and was transported to an area hospital where his condition has stabilized.
He is cooperating with the investigation and investigators do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Investigators could not locate a valid driver’s license for the Infiniti driver.
MCU investigators are also trying to determine the speed of both vehicles at the time of the crash, Florip said. It is believed that both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
Route 120 from O’Plaine Road to Route 21 was shut down for nearly eight hours following the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information on it is asked to call the Waukegan Police Department’s Traffic Division at 847-599-2630.
The case remains open and active and it will be reviewed by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete, Florip said.
