Prosecutors say a man punched the mother of his newborn baby in the head during an argument over what to name the child while at Highland Park Hospital.
Tevin M. Hoskins, 27, of the 200 block of West Forest Avenue in Round Lake, was charged with domestic battery causing bodily harm and domestic battery physical contact, both Class A misdemeanors.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Caitlin Valiulis said during a bond hearing Tuesday morning that the charges stem from an incident involving Hoskins and a woman.
Hoskins went to Highland Park Hospital on Monday to visit the woman hours after she had given birth.
Valiulis said that Hoskins and the woman began arguing over what to name their child.
Hoskins allegedly punched the woman in the head, which caused her to sustain a laceration that required stitches, according to Valiulis.
The newborn baby was not in the room at the time of the incident.
Officers with the Highland Park Police Department responded to the scene and learned Hoskins had fled the scene.
Officers arrested him following a traffic stop at Park Avenue West and Skokie Valley Road.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Hoskins held in the Lake County Jail on a $35,000 bond, meaning he would need to post $3,500 cash in order to be released.
Hoskins is scheduled to appear in court next on March 23 for a bond review hearing.
