John J. Abbamonte, 59, of Morton Grove.

A Cook County man was arrested after he allegedly impersonated a police officer and pulled a gun on another man in Crystal Lake, according to court documents.

John J. Abbamonte, 59, of the 9200 block of Natchez Avenue in Morton Grove, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, false personation of a peace officer and disorderly conduct.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges that Abbamonte unlawfully carried an uncased and loaded pistol in Crystal Lake on Thursday.

Abbamonte falsely represented himself to another person as being a police officer, the complaint said.

Abbamonte displayed the pistol while standing nearby the man, “provoking a breach of the peace,” the complaint said.

Officers with the Crystal Lake Police Department arrested Abbamonte around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Further details on the incident were not immediately available. Lake and McHenry County Scanner is awaiting comment from the Crystal Lake Police Department.

McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt set bond at $20,000. He was released from the McHenry County Jail on Friday after posting $2,000 cash.

Gerhardt also approved prosecutors’ request to have Abbamonte surrender all of his firearms and have no contact with the victim as part of his bond conditions.

A court hearing is scheduled next for April 29.
