A bicyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Hawthorn Woods Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The Countryside Fire Protection District and Hawthorn Woods Police Department responded around 1:10 p.m. Sunday to Gilmer Road and North Chevy Chase Road in Hawthorn Woods.

Hawthorn Woods Police Department Director of Public Safety John Malcolm said officers received a call for a car that struck a bicyclist.

Officers arrived on the scene and found a passerby had applied a belt as a temporary tourniquet to the bicyclist.

Malcolm said the victim had injuries to his lower extremity.

An officer immediately applied their own tourniquet until the Countryside Fire Protection District arrived on the scene.

The victim was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where his condition was stabilized, Malcolm said.

Countryside fire officials said the bicyclist suffered traumatic injuries in the incident, the Daily Herald reported.

The cause of the crash was not released and it is unknown if any citations were issued.

The roadway was shut down in both directions for approximately 45 minutes. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Hawthorn Woods Police Department.
