The Marengo Police Department announced that canine Shadow, who retired in 2017 after serving seven years on the department, died on Friday.

“Itโ€™s with deep sadness we announce the passing of K9 Shadow,” the Marengo Police Department said on social media Friday evening.

Shadow had just turned 14 years old last week.

He was born at Kulla Dogs in Marengo on March 17, 2008. Shadow served the City of Marengo from 2010 until 2017.

He was assigned to Officer Sonya Bass from 2010 to 2011, officials said. Shadow was then assigned to Sergeant Rodney Riley.

Riley retired in May 2017 after serving the department for 30 years. Shadow also retired at the same time as Riley.

“Thank you for your service and for protecting this community. Rest easy Shadow,” the department said.
