Felony charges have been filed against a juvenile who police shot at after he allegedly pointed a replica gun at officers in Round Lake Beach last week.
Round Lake Beach police officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Ridgeway Avenue around 5:57 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a person with a gun.
Round Lake Beach Deputy Police Chief Wayne Wilde Jr. said the witness who called 911 told dispatchers the juvenile had a gun in his hand and had pointed it at him.
Officers arrived and confronted the juvenile, who turned and pointed the firearm at them, Wilde said.
One officer discharged his firearm at the juvenile but the bullet did not strike the youth, Wilde said.
The juvenile was taken into custody without further incident.
Police determined during their investigation that the gun was a replica firearm, which looked “exactly like a handgun,” Wilde said.
The juvenile was transported by the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for observation.
The officer was transported to Northwestern Emergency Medical Center in Grayslake for observation.
The juvenile and officer have both been released. The juvenile was sent home with his parents, Wilde said.
On Friday, the Round Lake Beach Police Department and Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a juvenile referral for charges.
The charges include two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm on a police officer, aggravated battery to a police officer and disorderly conduct.
The juvenile currently remains in the custody of his parents, Wilde said.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
