A Waukegan man is being held on a $1 million bond in connection with a shooting that left another man injured in Waukegan last spring.
Jovanni Gallegos, 25, of the 1100 block of Lorraine Avenue in Waukegan, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony, and aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony.
A criminal complaint filed in Lake County Circuit Court alleges Gallegos fired a gun on May 6, 2021, in Waukegan.
Gallegos discharged the gun in the direction of another man, the complaint said.
The victim, who was 28 years old at the time, was shot in the arm during the incident, the complaint said.
The victim was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Waukegan Police Department identified Gallegos as the shooter and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges against him.
A Lake County judge issued a warrant for Gallegos last June, court records show.
Officers with the Waukegan Police Department arrested Gallegos on April 6 during a traffic stop.
They found him in possession of a firearm and a controlled substance. Gallegos also allegedly obstructed identification and was driving without a license.
In addition to his warrant charges for the shooting, Gallegos was charged with possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, obstructing identification, illegal window treatment and driving unlicensed.
Gallegos was ordered held in the Lake County Jail on a $1 million bond. He would need to post $100,000 cash in order to be released.
Gallegos remains held in the jail as of Sunday. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday for a motion of defense hearing.
