A long-time Grayslake firefighter, who served almost 23 years and was among the first members of Lake County’s dive team, died this week, the department announced.

Larry “Gene” Hermon, 82, of Grayslake, died on Monday, according to his obituary.

The Grayslake Fire Department announced Hermon’s death Friday “with great sadness.”

Hermon was a member of the fire department from August 1963 to May 1986 and served as First Assistant Chief.

He was also one of the first members of the Lake County Dive Team, which now consists of nearly 100 members from fire departments around Lake County.

“He was a well respected professional and will be missed,” the Grayslake Fire Department said.

His obituary said he was survived by his two daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will take place on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Strang Funeral Chapel in Grayslake.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at the same location.

The procession will leave Strang Funeral home at 1:30 p.m. to Northshore Garden of Memories in North Chicago.
