No one was injured after a semi-truck got caught in live wires and tore down two poles in downtown Grayslake, damaging a business and a parked vehicle.

The Grayslake Fire Protection District and Grayslake Police Department responded around 4:25 p.m. Wednesday to Hawley Street in front of Grayslake fire station #1 after a semi-truck got caught in live wires while it was driving down the street.

Grayslake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jim Weidman told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the semi-truck took down two poles, damaging a parked pickup truck and a nearby business.

The driver was initially trapped inside, but he safely exited less than 15 minutes after hitting the wires and no injuries were reported, Weidman said.

ComEd was requested to the scene and a portion of Hawley Street was shut down.

Power outages were reported in the area, but the fire station’s backup generator kicked in to provide power to the station, Weidman said.

A neighbor told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that live wires have been caught by moving vehicles on the street multiple times in the past.

She feels the village isn’t doing enough to address the hazard of low-hanging wires for large vehicles on Hawley Street.

Power was later restored and ComEd will fix the two poles at a later date, Weidman added.
