A fire that spread from a pizza oven to the roof of the building at That’s Amore Pizza in Crystal Lake Thursday evening has left the restaurant temporarily closed.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 9:18 p.m. Wednesday to That’s Amore Pizza, 105 North Main Street in Crystal Lake, for a report of a structure fire.

Crystal Lake Fire Chief Paul DeRaedt said the employees called 911 reporting a fire involving a pizza oven.

The fire had spread into the oven’s ductwork and eventually the roof of the business.

The employees had used three fire extinguishers in an attempt to control the fire before firefighters arrived, DeRaedt said.

Fire crews arrived on the scene in four minutes and confirmed a small fire in the ductwork of the pizza oven.

Additional crews arrived on the scene and reported a larger fire on the roof that was quickly extinguished.

The fire was declared under control at 9:46 p.m. The business sustained some smoke damage inside and fire damage to the roof, DeRaedt said.

The McHenry County Department of Health and the Crystal Lake Building Division were both notified.

DeRaedt said the business will remain closed until repairs are made and the health department approves resuming food service.

Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $10,000. There were no injuries reported.

Several area fire departments assisted the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department during the incident.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation by Crystal Lake Fire Rescue investigators.
