A Crystal Lake man was sentenced on Tuesday to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to possessing an explicit video of a child being sexually assaulted.
Eloy Cardoso-Ortiz, 47, of the 300 block of Keith Avenue in Crystal Lake, was charged with one count of possession of child pornography, a Class 2 felony.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said that Cardoso-Ortiz possessed a video file of a boy, who appeared to be under the age of 13.
A male adult was sexually assaulting the boy in the video, according to the complaint.
The Crystal Lake Police Department began investigating Cardoso-Ortiz after receiving a tip in September 2020 that a Facebook user was uploading illegal content.
Prosecutors said that officers were able to identify Cardoso-Ortiz and connect him to the IP address and Facebook account provided from the tip.
A search of two cell phones that were in the man’s possession revealed multiple images of child pornography, prosecutors said.
Detectives arrested Cardoso-Ortiz in January 2021 and he was transported to the McHenry County Jail.
A judge ordered Cardoso-Ortiz held on a $50,000 bond and he has been held in the jail since his arrest.
On Tuesday, Cardoso-Ortiz entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and pleaded guilty to his charge.
McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge sentenced Cardoso-Ortiz to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Cardoso-Ortiz was also ordered to pay $2,814 in court fines and fees.
