A half-dozen ambulances were called to transport eight people to hospitals after a three-vehicle crash on Route 12 in Lake Zurich Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Lake Zurich Police Department and Lake Zurich Fire Department responded around 2:30 p.m. Monday to Route 12 and Clover Hill Lane in Lake Zurich for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Pilgard said three SUVs were involved in the crash.

Between the three vehicles, 12 people were involved.

Firefighters had to extricate one victim who was trapped in one of the wrecked vehicles, Pilgard said.

A total of six ambulances were called to the scene.

The Palatine Rural, Palatine, Countryside, Wauconda and City of Barrington fire departments responded to assist the Lake Zurich Fire Department at the scene.

Eight of the 12 people were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment, Pilgard said.

The conditions of the eight victims were not immediately known.

The southbound lanes of Route 12 at Clover Hill Lane were closed to traffic for approximately two hours while police investigated the crash.

The roadway was reopened around 4:30 p.m., Pilgard said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Lake Zurich Police Department.
