Amanda M. Oie, 26, of Belvidere.

A former teacher has been arrested and charged with stealing over $13,000 in funds from an education association in Marengo, police said.

Amanda M. Oie, 26, of the 200 block of West Perry Road in Belvidere, was charged with theft over $10,000, a Class 2 felony.

Marengo Police Department Sgt. Andrew Kjellgren told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the charge stemmed from a police report filed in December.

Oie was a member of the Marengo Area Education Association (MAEA) and had access to accounts controlled by the association, Kjellgren said.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges that Oie stole approximately $13,170 from MAEA.

Oie used the funds for personal use, the complaint said.

Kjellgren said the theft occurred from January 2020 until December 2020.

The theft was discovered by other members of MAEA and a police report was made to the Marengo Police Department, Kjellgren said.

A warrant was issued for Oie after she was charged on May 17. She was taken into custody by police the same day, court and police records show.

Public records show Oie worked as a teacher for the Marengo-Union Elementary Consolidated District 165.

District 165 Superintendent Lea Damisch said earlier this week that Oie no longer works for the district.

Oie’s last day of employment was December 17. She resigned voluntarily, Damisch said.

Oie was released from custody after posting 10% of a $30,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 8.
