A 56-year-old Bartlett woman died after she was flown to the hospital following a crash involving two pickup trucks near Marengo Sunday afternoon.
The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:55 p.m. Sunday to Maple Street and West Coral Road in unincorporated Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire crews arrived within eight minutes and found two pickup trucks off the roadway at the northeast corner of the intersection, according to Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Communication Specialist Alex Vucha.
A preliminary investigation showed a red 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 51-year-old North Carolina woman, was traveling north on Maple Street approaching a stop sign at West Coral Road, according to a statement by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
A grey 2014 Ford F-150, driven by a 67-year-old Hampshire woman, was traveling east on West Coral Road approaching Maple Street.
For unknown reasons, the Chevy ran the stop sign and both pickup trucks collided, the sheriff’s office said.
Both vehicles had heavy damage and one rolled over into a field, Vucha said.
Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 51-year-old woman driving the Chevy was the sole occupant and the passenger of the Ford, a 56-year-old Bartlett woman, was airlifted by a LifeNet medical helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside in Rockford with life-threatening injuries where she later died.
The intersection was closed for approximately four hours while a crash investigation was conducted, the sheriff’s office added.
The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.
