A 31-year-old Capron man died and two others were injured after a car tried passing another vehicle and caused a multiple-vehicle crash in Fox Lake Saturday evening.
The Fox Lake Police Department and Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 8 p.m. Saturday to Route 173 between Wilmot Road and Converse Road for a report of a vehicle crash.
Fox Lake Deputy Police Chief Dawn Deservi told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a red Saturn coupe, black Toyota Highlander and a black Buick were involved in the crash.
The driver of the Saturn was pronounced dead at the scene.
The drivers of the Toyota and Buick were both transported by paramedics to area hospitals.
They have since been treated and released, Deservi said.
A motorcyclist was not directly involved in the crash but laid their motorcycle down in a ditch to avoid crashing into the other three vehicles.
The motorcycle rider refused medical treatment at the scene.
A witness told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that bystanders, including a nurse, attempted life-saving measures on the driver that died.
The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County (MCAT) was requested due to the seriousness of the crash.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office completed an autopsy on Monday and the driver that died was identified as Addem Wynstra, 31, of Capron.
Wynstra was traveling eastbound on Route 173 when he attempted to pass a vehicle, Deservi said.
Wynstra’s Saturn clipped the back of the second vehicle and went into oncoming traffic, crashing into the third vehicle.
Wynstra died from multiple blunt force injuries as a result of the crash, the autopsy showed.
The roadway was closed for around five hours while the crash was investigated.
The crash remains under investigation by the Fox Lake Police Department and Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County.
