A judge set bond at $200,000 for a 34-year-old Beach Park man who allegedly battered and attacked his niece, who is pregnant, with a piece of broken scissors near Round Lake, prosecutors said.
Jerrell Bulls, 34, of Beach Park, was charged with aggravated battery, two counts of domestic battery and aggravated assault.
The Round Lake Police Department responded to an address for a report of a bleeding woman, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelse Banks said during a bond hearing Wednesday morning.
The woman, who is Bulls’ niece, knocked on her next-door neighbor’s door and stated someone had a knife.
The woman used her neighbor’s phone to call 911 and told dispatch that she had been stabbed by a relative, Bulls, who fled the scene, Banks said.
Officers spoke to the neighbor, who told them they heard “crashing” in the woman’s apartment before she came to the door bleeding.
Officers noticed the victim had a cut on her thigh and blood on her neck, Banks said.
Bulls allegedly pushed and struck his niece while she was on a bed.
When Bulls left the room, his niece closed and locked the door, Banks said.
Bulls later returned and allegedly kicked in the door and attacked her with a piece of broken scissors.
He allegedly kicked his niece in the stomach and threatened to kill her.
Bulls left when another witness came in to break up the altercation, Banks said.
The victim stated she was pregnant at the time of the incident, but prosecutors were unsure how far along she was.
The Round Lake Police Department arrested Bulls and Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak set his bond at $200,000.
Bulls remains held at the Lake County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 20 for a preliminary hearing.
