A 19-year-old man was shot in front of an apartment building in Waukegan during a drive-by shooting early Friday morning, police said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 12:20 a.m. Friday to the 2000 block of Pine Street in Waukegan for a report of a shooting.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said officers arrived to find a victim who had been shot.

The victim, a 19-year-old man, was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

Florip said the victim was shot in front of the building. An SUV was seen fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.

An alert broadcasted over the Illinois State Police Radio Network (ISPERN) said that the shots were fired from someone in the vehicle.

The victim reported he did not know why he was shot, Florip said.

Multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene. The exact number and caliber were not released.

The male victim suffered “moderate injuries” that are not life-threatening.

He was expected to be released from the hospital, Florip said Friday.

The Waukegan Police Department’s Community Crimes Division is investigating the incident.
