A Huntley man was killed and a Wisconsin woman was critically injured after an ATV hit a tree on a property near Huntley, police said.

The Huntley Fire Protection District and Kane County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:45 a.m. Monday to the 18N800 block of Ridgefield Boulevard in unincorporated Huntley for an ATV crash.

An initial investigation showed that a Polaris ATV was occupied by two riders.

The ATV was traveling north on Ridgefield Boulevard when it left the roadway for an unknown reason, according to the sheriff’s office.

The ATV struck a mailbox and continued north where it struck a tree on the residential property.

Both riders were transported to hospitals with life-threatening injuries.

The driver was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The passenger remains in the hospital being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Neither rider appeared to be wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver was identified as Elpidio Marcelo, 24, who lived in Huntley nearby the crash site.

The passenger was a 21-year-old woman from Kenosha, Wisconsin.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, the sheriff’s office said. Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
