The Zion Police Department responded around 7:24 p.m. Wednesday to the 2000 block of Jethro Avenue in Zion for a call of shots fired.

Officers arrived to find a 19-year-old Zion man who had been shot outside, Zion Police Department Lt. Paul Kehrli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

The man had a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from the hospital.

The shooting was a “gunfire exchange” between two people, Kehrli said.

A juvenile who was fleeing the scene when officers arrived was taken into custody.

Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the same block of the shooting and recovered fired evidence and firearms parts.

Throughout the investigation, detectives recovered two guns and several shell casings, Kehrli said.

The juvenile has not yet been charged with the shooting itself but has been petitioned for charges regarding weapons offenses.

Kehrli said the shooting was not random and appears targeted.

It is unclear which person initiated the shootout and it remains under active investigation.
