A 61-year-old man is in critical condition after police say he drove his truck off the roadway and crashed into a tree near Crystal Lake early Monday morning.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:05 a.m. Monday to the area of East Crystal Lake Avenue and Gieseke Drive in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

The Cary Fire Protection District, Cary Police Department and Crystal Lake Police Department also responded to the call.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said a 2017 Capacity semi-tractor crashed west of the intersection.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the truck, driven by a 61-year-old Johnsburg man, was traveling westbound on Crystal Lake Avenue west of Gieseke Drive.

The truck left the roadway for unknown reasons before crashing into a tree on the south side of Crystal Lake Avenue, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with life-threatening injuries.

He remains in critical condition. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The sheriff’s office said it is unknown if the driver was wearing his seatbelt.

It is also unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriffโ€™s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit.
