Police say a man who fled after attacking his girlfriend in Fox Lake struck Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Dax as the police dog tracked him down and bit him Thursday evening.

The incident happened Thursday evening just before midnight in the 0-100 block of Bermuda Colony in Fox Lake.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said that Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy John Forlenza and his partner Dax were called to assist the Fox Lake Police Department.

A man battered and choked his girlfriend before fleeing the scene, Covelli said.

He also stole the victim’s cellphone so she could not call 911 before he fled.

Dax arrived and conducted an immediate track. A short time later, Dax found the man hiding under a blanket near an electrical box.

The man refused to surrender and Dax bit the man’s arm, Covelli said.

The man struck Dax but was quickly taken into custody by police officers.

Dax was not injured and the man was turned over to the Fox Lake Police Department and charged with several felonies.

Court records are still pending for the suspect and he has not been transported to the Lake County Jail yet.
